There’s an explosion of audio content out there right now, and while some may think the market is over saturated, that certainly isn’t the case. Podcasts are perfect for conveying a message, educating others and bringing a prominent voice to your brand. If you have something to say people will tune in and listen, it’s just a question of finding your voice.

On a recent episode of Anomalous Educator, I asked the ‘Sigmund Freud’ of podcasting, Ronsley Vaz to break down how we can all speak up with authority and keep the conversation flowing. 

Ronsley is the founder of the audio marketing company Amplify, and has highly successful podcasts such as Should I Start a Podcast, Bond Appetit and is the gracious host of Amplify’s annual podcasting conference We Are Podcast. So, naturally he was the perfect person to ask.

Find Your Authentic Voice 

Okay, so finding your voice can be a tough. This point isn’t about your tone, cadence or your interviewing methods.  At Amplify, Ronsley begins to help someone establish his or her voice by exploring their true passions. “The best thing about podcasting is that you get a chance to put a line in the sand and say, ‘This is what I stand for,’ “he says. When you voice your passion aloud, you start to hear it differently, rather than it just circling around your head. 

So, what is it that you truly care about? What could you talk about for thousands of hours and still have so much more to say? If you care about your subject, your conversations will be enthusiastic and interesting. 

Building a Podcasting Brand 

Building a podcast brand may not seem easy, but once you have the foundational settings in place, then you can begin to structure an identifiable brand around it. So, some points to consider as a pre-brand base are:

  • What do you genuinely care about?
  • What got you into your line of business in the first place?
  • Think about what success looks like for you one year down the line.
  • Understand and figure out what skills or experience you have that you may be taking for granted, but others would benefit from
  • What subject would you defend to the death?
  • Think about your audience – who do you want to reach and speak out to?

Have Eye-To-Eye Conversations

So, you’ve started interviewing people for your new podcast, one thing Ronsley suggests is to consider having your conversations eye-to-eye. Talking to someone face on, generates a completely different tone to a conversation. You notice so many subliminal visual cues, and valuable signs in their body language such as someone moving forward to speak into the mic. It allows you to stay present in a conversation, so when it comes to Skyping over a phone call, go for the former. 

Step Back and Listen

Another vital point that isn’t always practiced with podcasters, is that when we’re having a conversation you should know when to keep schtum. Ronsley feels we take silence for granted, and leans to the fact that when a lot of us speak, we just think about the conversation rather than listening. 

Remember, you absolutely have something to talk about and your experience could be valuable to someone else. You just need to establish what it is that you’re passionate about, and build a good solid brand around that – people will listen.
