It’s time to finally join the crowd and make money online. Today, I’m going to show you the top ways for people over 40 to make money online — each of them something you can implement this weekend, if you so choose.

We’re not talking about risky ventures. None of these concepts involve gambling, flipping, or even trading stocks.

They’re all tried and true techniques used by thousands of people to earn a comfortable living online. Some, like teaching and tutoring, allow you to earn a solid living rather quickly while others take time to grow.

These options aren’t a ‘gimme.’ They’re not ‘get rich quick’ schemes or handouts. All of these require hard word just like any job or business. But the reward is two-fold — there’s the financial gain, of course, but you also have what’s known as location independence.

This means you can work from anywhere, at any time (as long as you have strong internet, of course!).

Maybe this isn’t right for you at the moment, but seems like a good fit for someone you know — please pass this info along! Here are the top ways for people over 40 to make money online.

1. Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL)

As more language schools move their services online, those desiring to learn a language are doing the same.

Because of this, TE TEFL teachers have the ability to make a good living without having to travel overseas to work. In virtual classrooms or over Skype, instructors work one-on-one with students in a direct immersion environment.

English is most in demand, with teachers typically earning at least $15/hr teaching online (and much more once they’re a bit more established).

We covered how to start teaching English online in-depth in this guide, but here’s a quick rundown:

  • Get your gear setup in order.
  • Decide if you will teach with a certain school, or if you’ll make a go at working freelance.
  • Get any necessary certifications required by that school or company with BridgeTEFL.

We dive deeper on teaching English online across this website. Here are a few examples:

Teaching English online is one of the top ways for people over 40 to make money online because there is no worry of not being hired due to age or being over-experienced, and the global market is always expanding.

2. Becoming a tutor or coach

Maybe you have no interest in teaching English but have expert-level knowledge in a specific area that could be of value to others.

Online tutoring is a great way to monetize your expertise in almost anything that you can niche down and market.

Helping students with music lessons, math, writing, business coaching, health and fitness, or other subjects is a great way to put your passion and knowledge to use.

Again, your experience is a big factor here. Online tutoring, however, is not only an option for those ready to commit full-time. It can also be one of the top ways for people over 40 to make money online in their spare time.

If you’re looking to work restricted, part-time hours to supplement their monthly income. Work with as little as one student, and slowly take on more as your schedule allows.

3. Build a blog

It seems like everyone has a blog these days. Your kids or grandkids, your coworkers, your friends — the internet has made it easy for anyone to become a storyteller.

If you’ve spent any time perusing blogs, you’ve likely found yourself entertaining the idea of starting one yourself. Maybe you already have, but haven’t had the time to build it to its full potential.

Blogging can be a great way to build passive income, as long as your site offers value to its readers that they aren’t getting somewhere else.

If you have specific knowledge about a topic, no matter what it is, that others want to know, blogging about it can be a great way to turn that knowledge into a useful, profitable website.

We’re not going to get too in-depth on the basics of blogging here — I encourage you to check out the links below if you’d like to know more.

But we want to emphasize how passionate and influential blogs can be (you’re reading a blog right now!) and convey that for someone unsure of how to convert their expertise in a subject into a useful resource, a blog might just be the best way forward.

If you can relate to these three things, a bright blogging career might be in your future!

  • My career experience has helped to shape the way I present myself.
  • No one can replicate my specific experiences, personality, and ways of doing things.
  • I feel that I have a lot to share about my passions and haven’t really had a way of doing that before.

Of course, you need people to read your blog. Whether or not you have a blog currently, figuring out how to drive traffic and monetize your site is an entire process in itself.

We signed up for and worked through courses with a great company called Create & Go to create a path to monetization for another blog I ran, and are proud to say our site now earns passive revenue through affiliate marketing because of what we learned in their course Make Money Blogging for Beginners.

Blogging takes time — creating quality content and marketing it to your audience is certainly not an overnight slam dunk.

But the thing is, there’s no better way to take the knowledge you’ve gained throughout your life and career and put it to use helping others.

You have complete control over what you write and who your target audience is — and the path towards monetization you want to take.

This can happen through affiliate marketing, creating a course or ebook and selling it to your audience, or perhaps building a backend subscription community behind your blog that engages and connects readers.

But if you’re serious about blogging, one of these two courses will certainly prove to be a valuable investment:

4. Freelance or work for a ‘distributed team’

A ‘distributed team’ is exactly what it sounds like — a team of employees or contractors who all work for one company, but are remote and spread across different locations.

Many modern businesses no longer care where their staff is located as long as they are able to complete their tasks and remain a vital component to the company’s mission.

This means it’s no longer necessary to sit in a cubicle from 9 to 5 every day, and more and more people and brands are embracing this concept (probably why you’re reading this article in the first place, eh?).

Finding work can seem like pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

But because there are so many people working online these days — The New York Times reported in 2017 that 43% of Americans claim they work at least partially online —  that there are now a number of job marketplaces, newsletters, and portals designed to help connect businesses and employers with those who can solve their problems.

There are sites like Upwork, which allow you to create a profile and submit proposals for freelance contracts. Once hired, you handle all communication, including payment and contracts, with the client through Upwork’s portal.

Upwork guarantees payment and serves as a liaison if any issues arise.

Through their site (and other similar platforms), you can do just about any type of work that can be done online — writing, web design and development, graphic design, photography, translation — if you have a valuable skill, odds are there is someone willing to pay you for it.

Additionally, there are a number of e-newsletters built specifically to share online and remote job vacancies. Here are a few of the most reputable:

Freelancing is one of the top ways for people over 40 to make money online because it gives them the chance to put the skills used throughout career and life to use for themselves — not just for a large company.
